What is The Widnes Waterfront Economic Development Zone (EDZ)?

The Widnes Waterfront EDZ is a regeneration programme aiming to transform over 360 acres of low quality industrial land into a new, regionally significant, commercial and tourism development site on the banks of the River Mersey.

 

Where is the Widnes Waterfront?

The Widnes Waterfront programme area is situated between Widnes Town Centre and the Mersey Estuary.

Who are the programme’s key partners?

The programme is led by Halton Borough Council. It has received support from Government Office North West (GONW), Northwest Development Agency (NWDA), Halton Strategic Partnership, the Environment Agency (EA) and Widnes Regeneration Limited.

 

Who are the main developers in the Widnes Waterfront?

When did the programme commence?

The programme began when it was awarded European Objective 2 funding in 2002.

 

Where are the plans for the programme documented?

The aims and objectives of the programme are documented in the Widnes Waterfront Masterplan Framework Phase 2 adopted by the Council in July 2009.

 

How many jobs will be created?

It is estimated the Widnes Waterfront will generate 1,100 jobs over the programme lifetime.

 

How can I apply for jobs within the Widnes Waterfront?

• Check the local press and relevant company websites regularly for any news on the developments
• If you are unemployed you should register your interest with Job Centre Plus (0845 604 3719)
• If you are not already registered with Halton People into Jobs (HPIJ), you could register with HPIJ and record your interest with an Employment Adviser (0151 471 7516)
• If your are unemployed and looking for work you may want to consider enrolling for the HEP Award in Hospitality, Leisure or Customer Care, or the Retail or
  Customer Care course to improve your employability in these sectors. You should contact the HEP team on 0151 906 1566 for more information.

 

What will be the benefits of the Widnes Waterfront to the local community?

There are a number of benefits for the local community including:-

• The creation of 1,100 new jobs
• The provision of new parkland and wildlife habitats
• New leisure and retail facilities
• Improved links between the Waterfront and Widnes Town Centre

 

How are the local business community kept informed of progress?

Our quarterly e.newsletter, Waterfront, is circulated to the Widnes Waterfront business community. Previously a quarterly newsletter was distributed to all companies in Halton. Past issues can be viewed via the News section of the website.

A Business Steering Group has been established for attendance by the Widnes Waterfront business community providing an open forum between the Council and existing Waterfront businesses.
